Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

chronic-kidsney

This is characterised by the slow, steady deterioration of kidney function over time. The kidneys are the vital body organs that filter wastes and excess fluids from blood, maintain an electrolyte balance, and produce hormones to control blood pressure. At KaSha Kidney Clinic, we use a holistic approach to managing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that seeks to improve the patient’s general well-being and retard disease progression. Our integrated staff includes nephrologists, dietitians, nurses, and social workers who work together to offer individual care.

Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis

The main role of hemodialysis is to filter and purify the blood when the kidneys cannot perform the vital function adequately. Kidneys maintain the body’s internal balance and filter out waste products, excess fluids, and electrolytes from the bloodstream. When kidneys fail, these harmful substances accumulate in the body, leading to serious health complications. Hemodialysis acts as an artificial kidney, mimicking the natural filtration process to remove toxins and restore the chemical balance within the blood.

Kidney Biopsy

A kidney biopsy is a medical procedure in which some tissue from the kidneys is cut off to be studied. It is performed to detect kidney diseases or determine the level of developed conditions. A fine needle enters the skin into kidney tissue as the sample is obtained. After that, the sample is analysed under a microscope to detect anomalies like inflammation, infections, or tumours. Kidney biopsies are significant in directing treatment options and estimating the prognosis of different kidney diseases.

Vascular Access Planning

Vascular access planning is important in caring for patients requiring hemodialysis. It investigates the optimal approach to accessing the bloodstream to achieve easy dialysis removal and blood return during sessions. There are various types of vascular access, including arteriovenous fistulas, arteriovenous grafts, and central line catheters. Developing a good plan ensures stable access to dialyse, thus reducing complications and enhancing the overall effectiveness of treatment.

Hypertension

More commonly known as high blood pressure, it is a cardiovascular disorder that manifests in increased blood pressure levels. It represents a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney complications. Although diet changes, physical activity, and stress control play an important role in controlling hypertension. Sometimes, medications are given to regulate blood pressure. To minimise the complications that are caused by long-term high blood pressure, regular monitoring and follow-up of treatment plans must be observed.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Renal replacement therapy, which entails using the peritoneum, a membrane that lines up the abdominal cavity for waste and excess fluid filtration, is known as Peritoneal dialysis. A sterile dialysis solution flows into the abdomen through a catheter; in this procedure, after dwell time, it is drained along with waste products. This procedure occurs several times a day and allows for continuous elimination of toxins. Patients with end-stage renal disease find peritoneal dialysis appealing as it is flexible and can be done from home. Nonetheless, precise compliance with hygiene and procedural standards is an absolute requirement to prevent infections and retain the effectiveness of treatment.

Renal Transplant

For individuals with end-stage renal disease, renal transplantation stands out as the optimal treatment choice. It offers superior outcomes in both lifespan and overall quality of life when compared to alternative methods of renal replacement therapy, such as hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The range of options in renal transplantation extends beyond live related blood group-compatible transplants to include ABO incompatible transplants, swap renal transplants, and deceased donor transplantation.

Diabetic Kidney Disease Management

Diabetic kidney disease is a complication associated with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, impacting the kidneys. Poorly managed diabetes can lead to damage in the kidney’s blood vessels, affecting blood filtration and contributing to elevated blood pressure.

Factors contributing to the risk of diabetic kidney disease include:

  •     Poorly controlled blood sugar levels
  •     Inadequate management of blood pressure
  •     Smoking
  •     Elevated cholesterol levels
  •     Obesity
  •     Family history of diabetes
